Pipe Bursting/ HDPE
High density polyethylene (HDPE) fused pipe is pulled through the host pipe. A significant diameter lose occurs and the trenchless purist must overlook the insertion pit that is sometimes required for installation. Lateral connections, if needed, must be dug up for saddles or fusing.
Bursting is a well established method for trenchless replacement of worn out and/or undersized sewer pipes. The existing pipe is replaced with a size for size pipe or an upsized pipe. The new pipe is put in the same location as the old pipe. You ask how this is done? The bursting head is inserted into the old pipe and forced through. The rear of the bursting head is connected to the new pipe. The front is connected to the hydraulic pulling unit.
When is pipe bursting needed? When there are too few lateral connection to be reconnected within a replacement section. Old pipe is structurally deteriorated, when additional capacity is needed. Restoration and environmental mitigation requirements are time consuming.
